- Terrie Batson-Newkirk: (Owner, Tap and Dance & Burn) Mrs. Terrie began dancing at the age of 5 and began teaching at 15 for the Baldwin-Copeland Studio of Dance. She taught students of all ages tap, ballet, jazz, Pointe, clogging, acrobatics. In 1989 Terrie moved to Atlanta and then to Raleigh where she taught dance classes at several studios. Upon her return to Wilmington, at 26, she continued to instruct students privately for pageants and dance competitions. Under her instruction many dancers have won numerous awards, scholarships and recognition in the dance arena and some have opened their own dance schools. Her routines and dancers have been awarded regional & national honors for choreography, dance spirit, overall placements, grand championships, etc. In 1993 Mrs. Terrie opened Techniques In Motion School of Dance. She attributes her teaching techniques, ethics and values to the traditional styles of Mrs. Betty Baldwin and in the most recent years to the styles of Mike Minery, Christopher Smith and Anthony LoCascio. She continues to gain enthusiasm and passion for her teaching from the importance of making a positive difference in her student's lives, being a role model and mentor and to the blessings of family, friends, past, current and future students and their families.
Jennifer Spivey: (Artistic Director, Technique, Kidz Zone, Jazz, Lyrical & Ballet). Miss Jennifer began her dance training at the age of six. She studied under Baldwin-Copeland Studio of Dance, Danceworks & Techniques In Motion. She has been on the competition level since the age of eight and began assisting classes at the age of fourteen. At sixteen she began to instruct classes of her own. At 18 she was chosen from hundreds of dancers to tour the United States with Hoctor's Dance Caravan as a Caravan Kid. During the experience she studied all forms of dance from world famous instructors, choreographers & performers. She received a degree from Louisburg College in Dance Performance and relocated to Orlando, Florida to entertain & perform at Universal Studios. In 2001 she reunited with T.I.M. School of Dance and has since been awarded numerous choreography & specialty awards.
Kasi Lynch: (KMOTION Competition Teams) Miss Kasi studied numerous styles of dance for nineteen years at studios throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York City. She began doing choreography in New Jersey at the age of 13. During high school, Miss Kasi moved on to serve as the dance captain and assistant choreographer of five musical theatre productions. Her senior year she began teaching hip-hop at For Dancers Only in Vernon, New Jersey, and won her school and county dance award. In March of 2003 she became a member or the Port City Diesel Diamonds Dance Team and a part of the Techniques in Motion family. The dance season of 2004-2005 Miss Kasi became the instructor for KMOTION, Techniques in Motion's hip-hop competitive company. Since this time Miss Kasi has won multiple choreography awards, five of them within the past two competition seasons. Under her instruction many of her routines have won prestigious awards for high scores, and many of her students have won specialty awards, scholarships, and other honors. Miss Kasi has continued her own dance education through conventions, workshops and intensives studying hip-hop under Kaba Modern & Iconic Dance Crews from MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew”, Barry Youngblood, Dena Rizzo, Darrin Henson, Gerard Heintz, Geo Hubela, and Freddie & Q aka “The Boyz”. She currently resides in Raleigh continuing her academic education at North Carolina State University, working towards her Master’s in Community Agency Counseling.
Melissa Fowler: (Acrobatics) Mrs. Melissa has 20 yrs of dance experience in tap, jazz, gymnastics, and acrobatics. In 2002 Melissa began to train young students in tumbling at T.I.M. She rejoins the studio for her third year to instruct acrobatics classes. Melissa is a former member of Tumblebees Gymnastics team in Greensboro, NC and a 1986 performer on Sesame Street with Bob McGrath, 1986 Miss Cinderella Miss, and 1988 Miss Chadbourn Princess. She is also a certified Medical Assistant and bookkeeper for her husbands plumbing company. Melissa has two daughters, Hayley and Hannah, in the TIM Performing Company.
Gretchen Merix: (Modern & Ballet) Mrs. Gretchen grew up in southwestern Virginia. She trained and competed with Blacksburg Dance Academy in the areas of ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, and modern. She began teaching at BDA at age 16. While in high school, Gretchen also studied ballet at The Center of Dance under Carol Crawford Smith, a principle dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. She attended Virginia Tech to study engineering, where she joined the Contemporary Dance Ensemble, a student run Dance Company. Since moving to Wilmington four years ago with her husband, Brandon, Gretchen has done choreography for the Dance Cooperative and this past year she directed a dance and music performance to raise money for the Hokie Spirit Scholarship Fund. She joined the staff of T.I.M. two years ago and began traveling to competitions with the Performing Company last year. Gretchen is so happy to have the opportunity to work with the students at T.I.M. and is very excited about the upcoming dance year.
Malinda Hall: (Discovery Motion Tap & Ballet). She began dancing at 6 years old at the YWCA and later at Dian's Danceworld. She was a performer with the Goforth Dancers for many years. While at Dian's, Mrs. Malinda taught students in clogging, jazz, tap & ballet. In college she started dancing at Danceworks and later taught tap & creative movement to students of ages 3-6. Malinda had the honor of working with George Lucas on the TV show "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles as well as performing in local theater as a choreographer & featured dancer. After a nine-year absence she returned to dancing in 2005 when her oldest daughter, Sydney, began dancing at T.I.M.. Malinda is currently a second grade teacher in New Hanover County where she has been employed since 1996. Mrs. Malinda began teaching @ T.I.M. in the fall of 2006 and is very excited about returning to the dance school as a teacher and looking forward to working with everyone in the Techniques family.
Tara Webb: (Jazz & Hip-Hop) Miss Tara began dancing at the age of three, and from the first day of class has been passionately in love with everything about dance. She received most of her dance training at Wilmington Dance Academy and began seriously competing at the age of seven. At the age of sixteen, she became the principal dancer and assistant teacher at Cape Fear School of the Arts and by the age of 17 became the Jazz and Tap instructor for the Mini and Junior Competition companies. Tara continued to compete as a soloist and as a member of the Senior Elite team throughout high school. She is the proud parent of two daughters ages 19 and 6 months.
Lindsay Husch: (Tap) Miss Lindsay began her dance training in Raleigh at the age of four and has been competing since the age of seven in tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, modern and hip hop. She has traveled all over the United States to participate in dance intensives in New York, Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina and Virginia instructed by Joey Pizzi, Kim Wolfe, Nick Bowman, Wes Veldink, Jason Parson, Mandy Moore, Tabitha and Napoleon, Nick Lazzarini, Lauren Adams, Wade Robson, Cory Finn and Dee Caspary. Lindsay was an assistant teacher at the age of twelve and began teaching tap and ballet at the age of sixteen. She also was the captain of the dance team in high school where she choreographed jazz and pom routines. Miss Lindsay is looking forward to another fun and successful year at Techniques in Motion. She was able to win four choreography awards over the company season and is even more excited about the years to come.
Ashley Richardson: (Administrative Assistant) Ashley has danced with Techniques in Motion since January of 2004. In 2007 she became a member of TIM K-motion Hip-Hop Company. Outside of dance Ashley likes to read, spend time at the beach, and write. She is a junior at UNC Wilmington, majoring in finance. After graduating she hopes to live in Washington D.C. and work as a financial advisor.
